Traditional life in northern climates

We have much to learn from the old traditional ways of living. Not long ago there was no such word as “bushcrafting”. It was simply what everyone knew and did in normal life. The videos below portray different aspects of such life in northern climates.

Sami & Siberian people

These are a series of documentaries portraying the life of the Sami, the indigenous people of northern Scandinavia and Siberian tribes.

Alone in the Wilderness

Perhaps not so much to learn from, but to be inspired by. “Alone in the Wilderness” is the story of Dick Proenneke living in the Alaska wilderness, building his log cabin by hand in 1967 at age 51 and staying there for 30 years, regularly writing in his journal.

Surviving in the Siberian Wilderness for 70 Years

In 1936, a family of Russian Old Believers journeyed deep into Siberia’s vast taiga to escape persecution and protect their way of life. The Lykovs eventually settled in the Sayan Mountains, 160 miles from any other sign of civilization. In 1944, Agafia Lykov was born into this wilderness. Today, she is the last surviving Lykov, remaining steadfast in her seclusion.
